What is perometer testing?

The perometer is a quick, easy, and non-invasive machine that uses a moveable frame with light sensors to scan and measure the volume of your limb.

What happens during the assessment?

The assessment begins with the completion of 2 intake forms, prior to having your measurements taken. If you are having your arm volume measured, you will be asked to sit with your arm straight out to the side with your fingertips resting on a small ledge. The technician will then move the perometer frame along the length of your arm. If you are having your leg volume measured, you will be asked to stand with one leg inside the frame. The technician will then move the frame up and down your leg (from ankle to approximately mid-thigh level).

For images of what the set up looks like for both arm and leg measurements, please see here.

By consenting to have your limb volume measured using the perometer, you are also consenting for the technician to send your measurement to your treating healthcare professional (HCP). Your HCP will review your measurements with you (i.e., the technician is unable to share and/or discuss your measurements with you at your appointment).

How much does it cost?

The initial assessment (45 minutes) costs $40. Follow-up assessments (30 minutes) cost $30. Please note we are only accepting exact cash at this time.

How do I book an appointment?

Please note that in order to access this service, you must be referred by or currently seeing a healthcare professional who has experience assessing and treating lymphedema, and who has a valid license to practice in British Columbia. This could include a medical doctor, nurse practitioner, physiotherapist, or certified lymphedema therapist who is part of the BC Lymphedema Association Professional Directory.

What do I need to bring/wear/do?

If you are having your arm volume measured, please wear a sleeveless top. If you are having your leg volume measured, please wear tight-fitting leggings or shorts. There is a washroom on-site to change in.

Are there any risks involved?

It is possible you may experience fatigue/discomfort from the testing position and/or emotional distress. The technician will educate you on these risks prior to the assessment. You will be able to stop the testing at any time.
