The Arm Morbidity Self-Monitoring Study – AMS
Breast Cancer Research
The AMS study is to understand how to assess shoulder and arm problems related to treatment for breast cancer.
Study:
- ONE online questionnaire (20-30 minutes)
- ONE in-person physiotherapy assessment (30-35 minutes) near BC Cancer Vancouver
We are seeking women who:
- Have a diagnosis of early-stage breast cancer
- Received surgery for breast cancer on one side
- Within 6 weeks of radiation therapy: either start, completion, or currently undergoing
- Are over 19 years of age
- Have good English comprehension in order to understand the study forms
- No prior history of shoulder/arm injury, surgery, or any other musculoskeletal issue on the side of breast cancer surgery

CaRE-AC: Cancer Rehabilitation for People with Advanced Breast or Colorectal Cancers
Breast and Colorectal Cancer Research
CaRE-AC is an exercise program for individuals diagnosed with advanced breast or colorectal cancer. This research is a collaboration between UBC and BC Cancer. .
Purpose: To determine how delivering an 8-week supervised exercise program specific to advanced breast and colorectal cancer patients (CaRE-AC) compares to standard best practice care. The 8-week program includes weekly supervised exercise classes and self-management classes. Participants who are randomized into the CaRE-AC program have the option of participating in the program online or in-person. Participants randomized into the standard best practice care will receive information on exercise guidelines.

CaRE@Home: Virtual Rehabilitation for Cancer Survivors
CaRE@Home is an 8-week supervised exercise & self-management program delivered via a virtual platform (telephone, internet). This study is for individuals living with a history of breast, colorectal, lymphoma, or head and neck cancer who have completed treatment for their cancer and are struggling to recover or are dealing with treatment side effects.
Purpose: Researchers from the University of British Columbia and BC Cancer are studying the effectiveness of CaRE@Home vs. usual Care on disability and patient reported and physiological outcomes.
Eligibility Requirements
- Age 18 years or older
- Diagnosed with breast (stage 0-III), colorectal (stage I-III), head and neck (stage I-III), or lymphoma/lymphoproliferative disorder (excluded: recurrent, refractory, progressive, received or planning to receive transplant)
- Completed a primary treatment (i.e. surgery and/or radiation and/or systemic therapy of any kind) within the last 24 months
- Communicate sufficiently in English to complete intervention and questionnaires
- Willing to be randomized and participate in the 8-week virtual intervention
- Internet access

CHALLENGE Trial
Colorectal Cancer Research
The Colon Health And Life-Long Exercise ChaNGE trial
Purpose: Examine the effects of a 3 year physical activity intervention on disease-free survival in medically fit patients with high-risk stage II or stage III colon cancer who have completed adjuvant chemotherapy within the past 2-6 months.

Recruitment for the CHALLENGE trial is performed through the BC Cancer Agency, please speak with your oncologist to find out more information.
EXCEL: Exercise for Cancer to Enhance Living Well
EXCEL is a 12-week supervised virtual exercise program for individuals living in rural communities offering 2 group exercise sessions per week led by a trained professional. The program is designed to improve strength, cardio, balance, core stability, and mobility.
Purpose: Researchers from the University of British Columbia and BC Cancer would like to understand how the EXCEL exercise program may help with physical function and exercise behaviour in people living in rural communities who are diagnosed with cancer.
Eligibility Requirements
- Have a cancer diagnosis
- 18 years or older
- Be able to participate in mild levels of physical activity
- Have good English comprehension
- Be pre-treatment, or receiving active cancer treatment, or have received cancer treatment within the past three years
- Can participate in a virtual program (e.g. computer/tablet/smartphone with video)
- Live in Rural BC (not Metro Vancouver, Greater Victoria or Kelowna)

GRACE: Gynecological Cancer Balance Assessment Study
Purpose: Researchers at UBC / BC Cancer are evaluating balance instruments to determine which questionnaires and balance tests are most appropriate for people with gynecological cancers. This information will help inform the selection of future evaluation tools in cancer exercise research.
Eligibility Requirements
- Age 18 years or older
- Diagnosed with a gynecological cancer
- Completed primary chemotherapy/radiation treatment (within the last two years)
- If received surgery, at least 3 months post-operative
- Able to ambulate independently (with or without gait aides)
- Communicate sufficiently in English to consent, complete questionnaires and follow testing instructions safely
- Able to attend an in-person one-hour assessment in Vancouver

This study is open and welcomes referrals from oncology teams as well as directly from patients. Direct referrals can be made by email or a patient can self-refer.

MoVE 2.0
Purpose: To understand how a virtual exercise program may help with physical function and emotional wellbeing in people who are being treated for lung cancer.
MoVE 2.0 is a 12-week supervised virtual exercise program for individuals diagnosed with lung cancer and currently undergoing systemic treatment. A trained exercise professional will deliver 2 group exercise sessions per week over Zoom. The program is designed to improve mobility, strength, and aerobic function.
To take part in the study, participants must have access to an electronic device with audio and visual capabilities, such as a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer with a camera and microphone, and a reliable internet connection. The study team will loan tablets and WiFi to those who do not otherwise have access for the duration of the study and will provide training on how to access Zoom and/or WiFi for those who may be unfamiliar.
Classes will be held in Fall 2024.
This research is a collaboration between UBC and BC Cancer Vancouver.
Eligibility requirements:
- 18 years or older
- Have inoperable lung cancer
- Be approved to participate by treating oncologist
- Receiving, or about to receive, treatment (e.g., chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or targeted therapy)
- Not currently doing resistance training
- Have good English comprehension
- Resident of BC
